Sonoran Palo Verde or Palo Brea is one of our most attractive desert trees. As it ages, it retains its smooth green bark. It also has a unique sculptural quality that provides interest in the landscape. Like the other palo verdes, it blooms in the late spring with masses of yellow flowers. It is quite thorny, especially on young branches. Parkinsonia praecox grows at a moderate to f a s t r a t e , reaching a mature size of 25 feet tall by 25 feet wide. It is cold hardy to 20º F, and can e x p e r i e n c e some tip damage in very cold winters.
